Hotelschool The Hague
“Learning should be fun. The Footprint Challenge offered us a fun, interactive, learning tool to engage students.”
Hotelschool The Hague finds it important to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with the aim to achieve a better, more hospitable and more sustainable future for all. By organising the HTH Footprint Challenge they wanted to inspire their students and staff with an innovative tool that stimulated action and involvement. Together with Anna de Visser – Amundson, Joost de Vos and their colleagues we look back at the HTH Footprint Challenge.

Senior Lecturer & Research Fellow
Why did you organise the HTH Footprint Challenge?
“We believe that sustainability should be the starting point of all our decisions, what we eat, what we teach, how we renovate our new campus, and so on. Therefore, the Footprint Challenge is a great tool to plant sustainable seeds within our HTH community, both for staff and students, in the end (or actually in the beginning) it is us who need to make the change.”
How do you feel about doing this together with colleagues and students?
“The Footprint Challenge is a great tool to build community and drive awareness of the things we can all do to help the planet. In fostering a safe learning environment, I think it’s important as Lecturers we also show our vulnerability. This challenge put students, lecturers and management on a level playing field and through teamwork we saw we could learn from each other and make a difference.”
Joost de Vos
“Together we made a big impact.”
What do you think of the results of the HTH Footprint Challenge?
“It showed we can all make a difference but we still have a long way to go as a society in changing our behaviour and learning to respect the fragile environment.”
“The Footprint Challenge brought awareness and sparked staff and students to think about their own lifestyle, we all learned new things and changed small little things – together we made a big impact!”
What are you most proud of?
“I love that this was an interactive challenge we could participate in as a team, it provided us with a fun, yet informative learning moments and was the perfect activity to launch our new Minor.”
“There were some surprise high performers – sometimes a new employee or a student who you/we least expected to get so excited and involved.”
Would you recommend other organisations to participate in a Footprint Challenge?
“This is a great challenge for any organisation. It gave us a social and educational challenge we could all participate in.
